Hygiene Treatments

Regular dental hygiene appointments are important for maintaining a good standard of oral health and preventing issues such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

By visiting our dental hygienist, you can gain peace of mind that your oral health is in good condition and, if not, receive the necessary treatments to fix any issues before they become serious.

Maintaining a consistent schedule of dental hygiene appointments help to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy and strong throughout the year which in turn contributes to a brighter, whiter and more confident smile.

What happens at a dental hygiene appointment?

Visiting a dental hygienist regularly can work wonders for your teeth and gums. Not only will these appointments remove harmful plaque and tartar build up, but it also gives your dentist a chance to catch any potentially serious issues before they develop.

Standard hygiene treatment at Macaulay Dental Practice involves your hygienist:

  • Cleaning your teeth
  • Removing any plaque and tartar buildup
  • Checking for any signs of oral health problems.
  • Performing a scale and polish to leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh
  • Providing you with personalised tips and techniques for maintaining good oral hygiene at home.

A dental hygiene appointment also provides an opportunity to have any dental questions answered.

Your dental hygienist at Macaulay Dental Practice will always give you the best advice based on your individual situation and can offer advice about diet, oral health and cosmetic dental procedures that could help improve the look, health and strength of your smile.

The benefits of visiting a dental hygienist

Regular visits to the dental hygienist are hugely important for ensuring a good level of oral health. By neglecting your dental hygiene, you can face a myriad of issues, including tooth decay and gum disease, which can both lead to tooth loss.

The benefits of regularly visiting our dental hygienist are:

  • Professional cleaning of the teeth and gums to remove plaque and tartar buildup
  • Detection and prevention of oral health issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay
  • Education on proper oral hygiene techniques and personalised recommendations for maintaining oral health
  • Identification of any potential issues early on, leading to quicker and less invasive treatment
  • Regular check-ins to monitor oral health and track any changes or issues over time.
  • Advice on cosmetic dentistry treatment
  • Tips on how to better maintain your dental health at home.

How often should you visit a dental hygienist?

There is no one definitive answer and the answer will be different for everyone. If you are not receiving any on-going treatment, it is recommended that you visit a hygienist once to twice a year.

If you have any cosmetic treatments planned, your dentist may recommend that you see a hygienist for a thorough clean before you begin any complex work, such as dental implants.

Of course, you also have a say in how often you visit the hygienist. Some patients prefer to have their teeth cleaned and polished regularly, whilst others enjoy having a set appointment date every 6 months or yearly.

Practical teeth cleaning tips to keep in mind

Although regular visits to your dentist and the dental hygienist are important for maintaining good oral health, you still need to take measures to ensure your personal oral healthy routine is up to scratch. Otherwise, instead of improving your teeth and health, dentists can only fix the issues and problems that have developed.

Some practical tips that we encourage all our patients to follow are:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush and be sure to brush the fronts, backs, and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue!
  • Brush your teeth in a circular motion when using a manual toothbrush (an electric toothbrush will do this for you)
  • Floss at least once a day to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
  • Use an antiseptic mouthwash to help kill bacteria and freshen your breath.
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks, as they can damage your teeth and lead to cavities.
  • Don't smoke or use tobacco products, as they can stain your teeth and increase your risk of oral cancer.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Use an interdental brush to remove plaque and food particle from hard-to-reach places.
